Revisiting Disney Lessons

I absolutely adore Disney. Most people whom I know would agree with me. One aspect of Disney movies I especially love are the lessons they taught us growing up.Disney movies are known for their magical stories that enhance imagination, dare us to dream big, and remind us that nothing is impossible. I love the clever plots, beautiful music, and dynamic characters, but as I look back on these movies today, I love (even more) what they teach me today. A college girl trying to find her way.

What I really love about Disney movies are the lessons they teach us when we are finally grown up.

1. One Hundred And One Blessings

- The deepest happiness (the happiness that is imperishable) comes not from our belongings, but from our belonging. This springs from the sense of humility that acknowledges our dependency upon one another & the rest of creation rather than material things.

- Happiness and sorrow – blessedness and mourning – are as intimately related as life and death or flesh and blood. This is a tough topic because we are all victims. The society we live in tends to adhere to the notion that isolates ourselves from the experience of mourning. Thus, we shut ourselves off from the avenues to joy.

- The most responsive victories on earth are those that are forged through cooperation and persistence. Rather than exercising brute intimidation, we should utilize our compassion and are not afraid to be vulnerable. These are the winners.

2. Dos and Dont's of Humanity

- *Cue self-improvement & discovery to overcome prejudice* Loving each other stems from accepting ourselves.

- Love rules all – even king of the jungle. There is no greater power than that of true love and commitment to one another.

- “When destiny calls you, you must be strong. I may not be with you, but you got to hold on.” This reference is to family and family bonds. The movie Tarzan hones in on the importance of true family & family gained throughout life.

3. Stop and Smell the Roses

- The art of winning does not define a life – there is more to consider. Sit back & enjoy the ride. Human beings end to get caught up in all that is right & perfect. Imperfections in our lives keep us humble, experienced, and on our toes.

- Wisdom is the most essential power tool. Things are different today, but parents and mentors know the basics & that’s what we need to get through day to day life.

- Be a true friend and accept your friends for who they are without asking them to be someone different. This seems pretty straight forward, right? But there's a catch...we have the tendency to expect more from our friends than they can give to us. And we, in return, don’t want them to expect a ton from us – we are who we are.

4. You and Your Shadow

- Every one of us casts a shadow that has an impact on other lives, for good or bad. We can never avoid casting an influence. This of dropping a stone in water: ripples move until they reach the shore. It is going to hit the shore eventually - our impact will effect those around us. Once it has been exerted, it can never be recalled.

- We think we have the ability to control the consequences of their influence. A person may decide one day to change one day, but that does not change the influence & impact they have already made (it cannot be undone).

- Where a shadow is cast, there is light: the kind of shadow we cast has to do with the kind of light in which we stand. We have the power to shape others’ lives: shaping their thoughts, molding their opinions, lifting them up in inspiration or pulling them down in depression. The light is determined by the dreams that shine upon our lives. Light is the ultimate source of inspiration and truth that guides us.
